Design changes integrating the end plate and the adjacent insulating plate may reduce cost and weight as much as 90% compared to current fuel cell prototypes employing metal.A PEM fuel cell assembly contains a stack of about 200 series-connected cells. The stack is held together through bolting from the end plates to hold the bipolar plates in the stack together and compress the gaskets between them.
