工控指的是工業自動化控制，主要利用電子電氣、機械、軟件組合實現。它使用計算機技術，微電子技術，電氣手段，使工廠的生產和制造過程更加自動化、效率化、精確化，并具有可控性及可視性。
隨著現代化腳步的加快，很多行業的現代化設備已經取代了原有的傳統設備。那么原有的專門對傳統設備維修，調試動行的人員要么接受更高的培訓，要么被社會所淘汰。在自動化產業發展需求日益廣泛的今天，自動化專業人才成為非常搶手的人群。
為了適應現代化工業發展的需要，企業需要一大批適應時代特點的既具有專業理論知識，又具有專業操作技能的復合型、實用型、現代型的自動化人才。目前，我國工業制造業正在進行自動化生產轉型，對各類自動化生產設備的需求不斷上漲。隨著十二五提升裝備自動化的提出，業內預計PLC市場將處于持續增長狀態，到2013年預計市場規模將達到90億元。與此同時，PLC人才緊缺，眾多企業迫切需要懂PLC應用的人才。數據顯示，全國僅有17萬PLC從業人員，這顯然與企業需求相差甚遠。
總的來說，工控的從業人員的職業前景是很好的，業內曾經做過一個關于工控技術人員現階段工作月薪的論壇調查，調查結果顯示大部分工控人的月薪都在五千以上，這也證明了工控從業人員在社會上很受歡迎，而且隨著年齡的增長，工作經驗的增加，得到的社會回報會越來越大，因此工控行業是一個很光明的行業。
隨著社會信息化的不斷深入，關鍵性行業的關鍵任務將越來越多地依靠工控機，而以IPC為基礎的低成本工業控制自動化正在成為主流，本土工控機廠商所受到的重視程度也越來越高。隨著電力、冶金、石化、環保、交通、建筑等行業的迅速發展，從數字家庭用的機頂盒、數字電視，到銀行柜員機、高速公路收費系統、加油站管理、制造業生產線控制，金融、政府、國防等行業信息化需求不斷增加，對工控機的需求很大，工控機市場發展前景十分廣闊。
發展趨勢分析：DCS(集散控制系統)的發展趨勢雖然以現場總線為基礎的FCS發展很快，并將zui終取代傳統的DCS，但Fcs發展有很多工作要做，如統一標準，儀表智能化等。另外傳統控制系統的維護和改造還需要DCS，因此FCS*取代傳統的DCS還需要一個較長的過程。當前工控機仍以大系統、分散對象、連續生產過程(如：冶金、石化、電力)為主，采用分布式系統結構的分散型控制系統仍在發展。由于開放結構和集成技術的發展，促使大型分散型控制系統銷售增加。
作為計算機技術和自動化技術相融合的一種產品，近年工控機自身已經取得長足的技術進步，在大陸市場的應用也呈現出了新的局面，具體表現在以下四個方面：
*、從工控機產品的技術發展來講，“嵌入式系統”“無風扇結構”“機箱散熱”“固態硬盤”“箱式”“平板式”等新技術、新產品的應用，適應了自動化產品“小型化”“智能化”“低功耗”的發展趨勢，已經大大提高了工控機的系統穩定性，也降低了制造和應用成本；
第二、從工控機產品的形態來講，工控機產品的定義范疇日益擴大，甚至與商用PC、商用工作站等其它計算機產品之間的概念區隔逐漸模糊；工控機產品除了傳統的4U機架式工控機之外，箱式、面板式、單板電腦、嵌入式、便攜式、行業電腦等其它工控機產品形式也得到了許多客戶的接受認可和大量市場應用；
第三、從工控機產品的銷售渠道模式來講，一些供應商變更了原有的銷售渠道及模式，調整了直銷分銷的銷售策略側重，也變革了原裝整機、組裝整機、板卡的出貨配額。這些調整變革的背后，是各家供應商為適應市場發展的新形勢、提高客戶滿意度、搶占*的深層考慮和市場反應行為；
第四、從工控機下游應用行業來看，一些工控機傳統的優勢應用行業正在遭遇商用PC、商用工作站的挑戰，大有沒落甚至被取代的趨勢；而一些新興的應用市場卻不斷涌現，且呈現快速增長的趨勢。
因應工業自動化風潮，工業設備除須朝向智能化發展外，馬達控制網絡的建置也至關重要，因而吹起工業馬達聯網風潮。相較于微控制器（MCU）或數位訊號處理器（DSP）方案，具備平行運算優勢且能擴充多種通訊界面的現場可編程閘陣列（FPGA）系統單芯片（SoC），將在此波設計潮流中占盡優勢。
賽靈思（Xilinx）亞太區Zynq業務開發羅霖表示，白色家電通常只需要MCU做為馬達控制核心，不過高階工業馬達的控制系統中樞則多採分離式設計，方能應付復雜的運作機制；如由DSP負責演算法、MCU負責人機界面控制、FPGA則專責高速輸入/輸出（I/O）通訊界面。
羅霖進一步指出，「制造業智能化」、「生產線定制化」讓愈來愈多的工廠設備講求聯網與設備互聯，這也讓工程人員傾向採用「分散式」網絡來設計工業馬達控制系統；亦即工業馬達彼此之間也須具備互聯通訊功能，如此一來，馬達的溫度、濕度、電流、電壓等監測數據與故障診斷等參數，皆可透過云端中心回報給工程人員，進一步實現完整的工業自動化愿景。
工業馬達的聯網需求，也讓傳統工業馬達內採分離式設計的控制中樞不敷使用，必須透過更高效能且具備平行運算功能的FPGASoC方能進一步實現。
